Slate tiles are commonly used on both walls and floors internally and externally and provide a unique beautiful usually darker look. Slate also has great thermal resistance so it is widely used in counter tops. Slate tiles consist mainly of black colour and commonly have shades and veins of grey, blue, green, red and orange through them.
Slate belongs to a metamorphic group of rocks and can be defined as a fine grain rock derived from clay and shale. Slate possesses a cleavage that allows it to be split into sheets. Naturally, due to its formation, slate is very flaky meaning it has to be cut into slabs and then sheets in order to avoid cracking and flaking. Due to its rough texture, slate makes an ideal application in non slip flooring, proving it a common stone used in pavers, balconies and bathrooms.
Cleaning Slate Tiles:
Slate is extremely easy to scratch so regular vacuuming of the slate floor is necessary in order to keep the stone looking at its best. Slate can be cleaned with mild soapy water; however acid based cleaners should be avoided as they can damage the surface.
Being a flaky stone it should never be cleaned with the pressure higher than 800 PSI, considering the grout lines and healthy and have no cracks in them.
Before cleaning or high pressure cleaning slate floors or pavers, it is wise to find out what sealer was used to seal the slate as certain acid based cleaners are able to damage or strip off the sealer over a period of time exposing your stone to potential damage.
Slate itself is a very porous stone, meaning it must be sealed before use. It is a good idea to seal the slate before grouting as well.
Sealers range from water-based to solvent based, topical and penetrating. Topical sealers sit on top of the stone and have a glossy finish. The provide a reasonable level of protection from stains and have a lifespan of approximately two to three years.
Penetrating sealers, however, are absorbed by the stone and offer a much higher level of protection from stains, dirt, mould and much more. They can also have a much longer life of up to 15 years.
Solvent sealers penetrate deeper into slate and they are not always recommended as they give off a very strong odour during application and impossible to completely strip if ever required. They are harder to apply and can sometimes have a negative reaction to certain minerals in the stone.
